Os Wrath Sins são uma banda portuguesa (de Vila Nova de Gaia) de metal progressivo / thrash, que, apesar de ainda jovens marcam terreno no panorama musical português.
Nascidos em 2011, é em 2012 que os Wrath Sins se apresentam ao público, com actuações no Hard Club, Metalpoint, Side B, ou La Iguana, em Espanha.
Actualmente, mantêm a maioria da sua composição inicial - Miguel Silva (voz e guitarra), Rui Coutinho (guitarra) e Ricardo Nora (baixo), à excepção do baterista, que em 2017 passa a ser Diego Mascarenhas, após a saída de Diogo Márlon.
Desde o início que os Wrath Sins apostaram forte na composição e, em 2013 gravam a sua primeira demo, "Hierarchy". Um ano depois, em 2014, iniciam a composição daquele que seria o seu álbum de estreia - "Contempt Over The Fall Stormfall", com produção de André Matos (Heavenwood, Equaleft, entre outros).

musical nacional mais pesado
Em 2017 (9 de Dezembro) lançam o seu segundo trabalho, o brutal "Awakening", um álbum conceptual que atinge na alma quem o escuta. São 10 temas que se interligam numa narrativa abundante de personagens e metáforas, que nos levam numa viagem por mundos paralelos.
Com este álbum, os Wrath Sins foram catapultados para o pódio do trash nacional e não só, sendo inúmeras as reviews em revistas e sites internacionais, desde o Brasil à Roménia. A agenda da banda apresenta-se também, muito bem preenchida com concertos de Norte a Sul do país, sempre de casa cheia e a fazer novos fãs a cada actuação.
E foi devido a este sucesso, aliado ao facto de eu gostar imenso dos Wrath Sins, que estive à conversa com o Miguel Silva, para perceber um pouco mais qual o segredo do sucesso da banda da qual é vocalista. O meu muito obrigada ao Miguel, pela sua disponibilidade e eterna simpatia!
RA - Como é que vêem a projecção nacional e internacional que estão a ter com o vosso mais recente trabalho, "The Awakening"? Equacionam concertos, ou mesmo uma tour internacional?
Miguel - À medida que o feedback se foi dando e crescendo, sentimos uma óbvia e enorme satisfação aliada também a alguma surpresa, de certa forma, porque embora soubéssemos o trabalho que temos em mãos e a qualidade do mesmo, não contávamos conseguir atingir já um feedback tão vasto. A nível nacional tem sido extremamente positivo tanto em escrita de imprensa como de público durante a nossa tour, mas a nível internacional tem excedido as nossas expectativas.
Embora já com o nosso primeiro álbum tivéssemos conseguido desbravar algum terreno, este "The Awakening" fez-nos chegar a um pouco por todo lado, Franca, Espanha, Alemanha, UK, Suécia, Brasil etc., com convites de artigos, entrevistas, radio talks, reviews e inclusive concertos, o que nos encheu de orgulho. Vi-mo-nos inundados de uma adesão fantástica.
Passados 7 meses ainda não conseguimos sequer ter tempo de expor todos os reviews que saíram do álbum o que é significativo. Essa exposição internacional abriu portas, portas essas que estão abertas e contamos passá-las em breve. Temos as coisas muito bem delineadas no seio da banda, objectivos bem definidos e temos objectivo de voltar lá fora. O nosso lema é fazer acontecer e como tal assim faremos. Queremos manter os pés bem assentes no chão, dar um passo de cada vez, fazer aquilo a que nos propusemos e colocar o nome de Wrath Sins no mapa nacional em primeiro lugar. Nunca quisemos ser mais uma, e com o que temos vindo a fazer acredito que já não o sejamos.
RA - Vemos por aí muitas bandas, cujo apoio da editora, após o lançamento dos álbuns, é nulo, ou pelo menos não visível... No vosso caso, a Raising Legends está presente, partilha reviews, faz "Likes" em publicações de facebook sobre vocês. Querem falar um pouco dessa relação com a editora? Porque a escolheram?
Miguel - Tudo começou a quando da gravação do nosso primeiro álbum "Contempt Over The Stormfall" em 2015. O responsável pela editora André Matos, identificou-se com a nossa mentalidade, vontade e seguindo o lema da própria, ajudar os mais pequenos a serem grandes. Pode dizer-se que caiu-nos a proposta de integração no colo, através, obviamente, de muito trabalho envolvido e após 3 anos na mesma, podemos dizer que foi um casamento que resultou.
A editora revela-se presente, e nós fazemos com que a editora também se destaque através do nosso trabalho. Wrath Sins é sem dúvida nenhuma uma das bandas mais activas a nível nacional, com 6 anos de existência, 2 álbuns gravados, dezenas de concertos, tours nacionais, completamente geridas pela banda em si. A editora torna-se uma pequena extensão da banda, quando a banda não consegue chegar sozinha a "X" e isso torna-se importante, tal acontecendo a nível inverso. Mais uma vez o "The Awakening" trouxe-nos novidades e coisas positivas, tendo surgido também a nossa integração na editora sediada em Lisboa, Raging Planet, comandada pelo Daniel Mackosh, e que nos deu uma amplitude e visibilidade acrescida. São pequenas coisas a nivel nacional, mas que fazem a diferença.
RA - Todos vocês trabalham (cruzo-me algumas vezes com o Ricardo, no espaço comercial que partilhamos), têm vida pessoal, família, tu tens outros projectos musicais... Como é a conjugação disso tudo com os Wrath Sins, os concertos, os ensaios, a composição?
Miguel - Será talvez o mais complicado, ingrato e difícil de gerir. Acima de tudo estamos juntos à 6 anos (excepção com o nosso novo baterista Diego), e fazemos valer de facto a nossa vontade e espírito de sacrifício.
A banda é o nosso (infelizmente) segundo trabalho, mas é encarado como sendo o primeiro. Todos temos horários distintos a nível laboral, família, namoradas, inclusive filhos, como é o caso do Diego, e muitas das vezes temos de apelar a compreensão destes para seguir o que estamos a fazer. Felizmente todos temos namoradas, familiares que nos apoiam, que muitas das vezes estão presentes, e que nos dão aquele incentivo extra. Abdicamos do nosso tempo livre, das nossas folgas, do nosso descanso diário, em prol da banda e tentamos estar o máximo de tempo juntos possível, tanto a nível de ensaios, composição e obviamente agendamento de datas. Encaramos, e somos, uma família, acima de sermos uma banda. Eu, Nora e Rui conhece-mo-nos à cerca de 11 anos e agora com Diego, contamos que esta família se mantenha e estamos aqui para durar.
RA - Como é o processo de composição dos Wrath Sins? Juntam-se para compôr, surge primeiro a letra ou a música? De onde vem a vossa inspiração?
Miguel - No que toca a composição, é talvez aqui que curiosamente menos façamos em conjunto. Maioritariamente todo o processo criativo parte de mim, onde delineio a história/tema e tudo parte daí, definindo o ambiente, a natureza da música surge com maior naturalidade, e sem seguir uma linha, todas as pecas do puzzle acabam por se juntar. Quando tudo está arquitectado, sentamos-nos os 4 e cada um dando o seu toque, parecer e opinião, a composição fecha-se. No que toca ao "The Awakening" sendo ele um álbum conceptual. inicialmente foi criada e escrita a história do mesmo por mim, boa parte das letras e apenas depois todo o instrumental e arranjos. A nível de inspiração, sendo nós uma banda de mentalidade aberta, esta vem de tudo aquilo que nos inspira, diferentes géneros e moods. Não gostamos de ter restrições, musica é liberdade e essa liberdade ninguém nos pode tirar.
RA - São uma banda jovem, mas já com dois trabalhos editados e bem recebidos pela crítica. O que evoluiu do primeiro álbum para o segundo? O que podemos esperar no futuro?
Miguel - Sentimos que evoluímos imenso durante a tour promocional ao "Contempt..." e que essa evolução está espelhada no "The Awakening": um álbum mais maduro, mais progressivo, muito mais técnico e mais obscuro. Sabíamos e tínhamos consciência que "Contempt" demonstrava uma identidade que não se encontra no underground, e essa mesma identidade, a cada passo que damos, procuramos torná-la cada vez mais singular.
"The Awakening" afasta-se mais da veia "thrash" de "Contempt..." escalando por meios mais progressivos, ambientais, orquestrados. Sendo ele um trabalho conceptual, a interligação faz com que o álbum se torne mais único e mais completo. Mais conhecedores de todo o processo de gravação, captação e composição, "The Awakening" é um álbum de detalhes, de que me orgulho imenso, que prima pela identidade que procurávamos e roça na pretensão a que nos propúnhamos. Sentimos que a sua recepção valeu a pena, todo o esforço e dedicação, do qual obtivemos um feedback nacional e principalmente internacional avassalador.
Temos vários passos futuros a dar, muitas ideias a pôr em pratica. Queremos, como disse anteriormente, marcar pela diferença e essa diferença vai ser o nosso destaque no futuro.
RA - Conseguir vingar no meio musical de hoje em dia, e com uma sonoridade como a vossa, não é fácil. Qual o segredo dos Wrath Sins para conseguirem ganhar cada vez mais público? O que pensam do actual panorama musical? O Rock e o Heavy são nichos ou acham que "estão bem e se recomendam"?
Miguel - O segredo é dedicação. Sentimos que o meio musical do underground esta cada vez mais difícil, cada vez mais e complicado tocar, menos condições, menos bares, menor adesão a estes, sentimos que precisamos dia após dia lutar e trabalhar o dobro, para conseguir o mínimo daquilo que este meio "dava" à 10 anos atrás. A saturação, o publico e a sua faixa etária a avançar, sem grandes nichos de publico novo a aderir ao meio, é problemático, tal como a falta de apoio de bandas para bandas, sendo frustrante deparar-mo-nos muitas vezes com algo que aparenta ser uma competição.
É triste e desolador ver um meio "pequeno", tão minado, mas ao mesmo tempo tem tanta coisa boa, dá-nos tanta coisa boa e a conhecer pessoas que nunca iríamos conhecer caso não estivéssemos nisto,... isso e muito mais..., faz-nos trabalhar e acreditar que podemos levar o nosso nome mais longe. Sempre nos deparámos com uma avassaladora qualidade nacional, e uma gigante oferta, essa oferta continua a haver, mas ao mesmo tempo sentimos que 70% das bandas que estavam activas em 2012 quando começámos, já não existem. Isto é significativo para o meio, conhecendo imensos casos, e as mil razões, as que mais se assemelham é o cansaço. Falta de oportunidades, falta de apoio, de público, sacrifícios, trabalhos.
Se o meio se recomenda actualmente? Sim, sempre.
Se está bem? Acredito que poderia estar melhor, e tentamos fazer por isso. Hoje em dia, as bandas não podem contar com as editoras, as organizações de eventos, de festivais por si só. Ir à luta é essencial e ajudarem-se umas as outras. Quando isso acontecer e espero de facto que isso aconteça, as coisas serão diferentes.
RA - Têm muitos concertos agendados, mas não vos vimos em nos principais festivais do género (estou a lembrar-me de Vagos, por exemplo), apesar de tu estares presente no Laurus Nobilus com o teu outro projecto... é uma estratégia vossa?
Miguel - A nossa ausência para já dos grandes festivais, deve-se a varias razoes. Uma delas foi a altura em que o "The Awakening" saiu (finais de 2017) onde grande parte dos festivais para 2018 já se encontravam ( embora não anunciados, obviamente ) fechados, como são o caso dos exemplos que apresentaste. Sendo outra verdade é que a nível de festivais de maior expressão, o panorama nacional não apresenta uma grande variedade nem quantidade.
2017 foi um ano onde existiu um boom de festivais, mas grande parte deles deixou de existir em 2018 pela fraca adesão e despesas das respectivas organizações, e tudo isso acaba por prejudicar o meio e as bandas em termos de booking, que faz com que tenhamos que tocar em concertos de menor expressão, a dobrar. Sabemos também que o meio é pequeno, e que como dito anteriormente, tal como no mundo do trabalho, as amizades falam mais alto e vivemos num meio, onde existem "N" núcleos fechados. Sabemos que as oportunidades vão surgir, e esperamos que haja mais que um Vagos, um Laurus ou um Moita no futuro, que dêem oportunidades a mais bandas e essencialmente a bandas novas de diferentes estilos para se exporem.
Um bom exemplo é o Lord Metal Fest, que se irá realizar em Lordelo a 3/4 de Agosto, do qual faremos parte que conta com bandas como Heavenwood, Wako e Equaleft, entre muitos outros.
RA - Quais são as vossas principais influências / referências musicais?
Miguel - Considero-me um pessoa extremamente eclética a nível musical, mas destaco o James Hetfield dos Metallica como aquela figura que me fez pegar na guitarra e microfone e ter uma banda, o mesmo se aplicando ao Rui e Nora. Metallica foi a nossa inspiração para criar o que temos hoje. Todos temos gostos distintos o que torna Wrath Sins mais interessante, mas bandas como Sylosis, Machine Head, Trivium, Alter Bridge, Revocation e Metallica, são as que falam mais alto e são as grandes influências para aquilo que é Wrath Sins.

The Wrath Sins are a Portuguese band (from Vila Nova de Gaia) of progressive metal / thrash, which, although still young, mark the Portuguese music scene.
Born in 2011, it is in 2012 that the Wrath Sins perform to the public, performing at Hard Club, Metalpoint, Side B, or La Iguana in Spain.
Currently, they retain most of their initial composition - Miguel Silva (voice and guitar), Rui Coutinho (guitar) and Ricardo Nora (bass), with the exception of the drummer, who in 2017 becomes Diego Mascarenhas, after leaving Diogo Márlon .
From the beginning the Wrath Sins bet heavily on the composition and in 2013 they record their first demo, "Hierarchy". A year later, in 2014, they began to write their debut album "Contempt Over The Fall Stormfall" with André Matos (Heavenwood, Equaleft, among others).
In 2017 (9 December) they release their second work, the brutal "Awakening", a conceptual album that reaches in the soul who listens to it. There are 10 themes intertwined in an abundant narrative of characters and metaphors that take us on a journey through parallel worlds.
With this album, the Wrath Sins were catapulted to the podium of the national thrash and not only, being numerous reviews in magazines and international sites, from Brazil to Romania. The agenda of the band is also very well filled with concerts from North to South of the country, always full house and making new fans with each performance.
And it was due to this success, coupled with the fact that I really like the Wrath Sins, that I've been talking to Miguel Silva, to realize a bit more about the secret of the band's success. Thank you very much to Miguel, for your availability and eternal sympathy!
Miguel - As the feedback has been increasing and growing, we feel an obvious and enormous satisfaction allied to some surprise, in a way, because although we knew the work that we have in hand and the quality of the same, we did not manage to reach already a feedback so vast. Nationally it has been extremely positive in both press and public writing during our tour, but internationally it has exceeded our expectations.
Although the first album had already been able to break the ground, this "The Awakening" made us reach a bit all over France, Spain, Germany, UK, Sweden, Brazil, etc. with invitations for articles, interviews, radio talks, reviews and even concerts, which filled us with pride. We were inundated with a fantastic adhesion.
After 7 months we still can not even have time to expose all the reviews that left the album which is significant. This international exhibition opened doors, doors that are open and we expect to pass them soon. We have things very well delineated within the band, well defined objectives and we aim to go back out there. Our motto is to make it happen and as such we will do so. We want to keep our feet firmly on the ground, take one step at a time, do what we set out to do, and put the name of Wrath Sins on the national map first. We never wanted to be one more, and with what we have been doing, I believe we are no longer one.
Miguel - It all started when recording our first album "Contempt Over The Stormfall" in 2015. Editor-in-chief André Matos identified with our mentality, willingness and following his own motto, to help the little ones to be big ones. It can be said that we fell in the proposal of integration in the lap, through obviously much work involved and after 3 years in it, we can say that it was a marriage that resulted.
The publisher proves to be present, and we make the publisher also stand out through our work. Wrath Sins is undoubtedly one of the most active national bands, with 6 years of existence, 2 albums recorded, dozens of concerts, national tours, completely managed by the band itself. The publisher becomes a small extension of the band, when the band can not get to "X" alone, and this becomes important, this happening on the reverse level. Once again "The Awakening" brought us news and positive things, and our integration with the Lisbon-based publisher, Raging Planet, led by Daniel Mackosh, has also given us greater breadth and visibility. They are small things nationwide, but they make a difference.
RA - All of you work (I meet Ricardo a few times in the commercial space we share), have your personal life, family, you have other musical projects ... How is the conjugation of this with the Wrath Sins , the concerts, the rehearsals, the composition?
Miguel: Perhaps the most complicated, ingrate and difficult to manage. Above all, we are together at the age of 6 (except for our new drummer Diego), and we do in fact our will and spirit of sacrifice.
The band is our (unfortunately) second job, but it is regarded as being the first. We all have different hours at work, family, girlfriends, including children, as is the case of Diego, and many times we have to appeal their understanding to follow what we are doing. Fortunately, we all have girlfriends, relatives who support us, who are often present, and who give us that extra incentive. We give up our free time, our free time, our daily rest, for the sake of the band and we try to be as much time together as possible, both in terms of rehearsals, composition and obviously scheduling dates. We face, and we are, a family, above being a band. I, Nora and Rui have known each other about 11 years and now with Diego, we count on this family to remain and we are here to last.
Miguel: As far as composition is concerned, it is perhaps here that, curiously, we do less together. Mostly the entire creative process starts from me, where I delineate the story / theme and everything from there, defining the environment, the nature of the music arises more naturally, and without following a line, all the pieces of the puzzle end up joining. When everything is architected, we sit on the 4 and each giving his touch, opinion and opinion, the composition closes. As for "The Awakening" being a concept album. was initially created and written the history of the same by me, much of the lyrics and only after all the instrumental and arrangements. At the level of inspiration, being an open minded band, it comes from everything that inspires us, different genres and moods. We do not like to have restrictions, music is freedom and this freedom no one can take away.
RA - You are a young band, but already with two edited works and well received by critics. What evolved from the first album to the second? What can we expect in the future?
Miguel - We feel that we have evolved immensely during the promotional tour to "Contempt ..." and that this evolution is mirrored in "The Awakening": a more mature album, more progressive, much more technical and more obscure. We knew and were aware that "Contempt" demonstrated an identity that is not in the underground, and that same identity, with each step we take, we try to make it more and more unique.
"The Awakening" moves farther away from the "thrash" vein of "Contempt ..." climbing by more progressive, environmental, orchestrated means. Being a conceptual work, the interconnection makes the album become more unique and more complete. More knowledgeable about the whole process of recording, capturing and composing, "The Awakening" is an album of details, of which I am immensely proud, that presses for the identity we were looking for and touches on the pretension we set ourselves. We felt your reception was worth it, all the effort and dedication, from which we obtained overwhelming national and international feedback.
We have several future steps to take, many ideas to put into practice. We want, as I said earlier, to make a difference and this difference will be our highlight in the future.
RA - To survive in the musical environment of today, and with a sound like yours, is not easy. What is the Secret of the Wrath Sins to be able to win more and more public? What do you think of the current music scene? Are Rock and Heavy niches or do you think they are "okay and recommend"?
Miguel - The secret is dedication. We feel that the underground music medium is getting more and more difficult, more and more difficult to play, less conditions, less bars, less adherence to them, we feel that we need to fight and work twice as hard every day to achieve the minimum of what this half "gave" 10 years ago. Saturation, the public and its age group moving forward, with no big new public niches joining the milieu, is problematic, as is the lack of band support for bands, and it is frustrating to see ourselves often with something appears to be a competition.
It's sad and heartbreaking to see a "little" milieu, so undermined, but at the same time it has so much good, it gives us so much good and to meet people we would never know if we were not in it, ... and much more. .., it makes us work and believe that we can take our name further. We have always come across an overwhelming national quality, and a giant offer, this offer still exists, but at the same time we feel that 70% of the bands that were active in 2012 when we started, no longer exist. This is significant for the environment, knowing a lot of cases, and the thousand reasons, the ones that most resemble one is fatigue. Lack of opportunities, lack of support, public, sacrifices, jobs.
If the medium is currently recommended? Yes always.
Is it okay? I think we could be better, and we tried to do that. Nowadays, bands can not count on publishers, event organizations, festivals alone. Going to the fight is essential and helping each other. When that happens and I really hope that happens, things will be different.
RA - There are a lot of concerts scheduled, but we did not see you in the main festivals of the genre (I'm remembering Vagos, for example), even though you are present at Laurus Nobilus with your other project ... it's your strategy ?
Miguel - Our absence from the great festivals is due to several reasons. One was when The Awakening came out (late 2017) where most of the festivals for 2018 were already (though not announced, obviously) closed, as in the case of the examples you presented. Being another truth is that at the level of festivals of greater expression, the national panorama does not present a great variety nor quantity.
2017 was a year where there was a festival boom, but most of them ceased to exist in 2018 due to the poor membership and expenses of the respective organizations, and all this ends up harming the media and the bands in terms of booking, which causes us to have who play in concerts of lesser expression, to double. We also know that the medium is small, and that as stated earlier, as in the world of work, friendships speak louder and we live in a medium, where there are "closed" nuclei. We know that opportunities will emerge, and we expect that there will be more than one Vagos, a Laurus or a Moita in the future that will give more bands and essentially new bands of different styles to exhibit.
A good example is the Lord Metal Fest, which will be held in Lordelo on 3/4 August, which will include bands like Heavenwood, Wako and Equaleft, among many others.
RA - What are your main influences / musical references?
Miguel - I consider myself to be extremely eclectic on a musical level, but I emphasize the Metallica's James Hetfield as the figure that made me pick up the guitar and microphone and have a band, the same applies to Rui and Nora. Metallica was our inspiration to create what we have today. We all have distinct tastes which makes Wrath Sins more interesting, but bands such as Sylosis, Machine Head, Trivium, Alter Bridge, Revocation and Metallica are the loudest influences on what Wrath Sins is.
